All TRIAMET\u00ae heavy metals combine many of the extraordinary properties of tungsten with a precisely adjustable ductility \u2013 backed by over 100 years of experience in tungsten processing.<\/p>\n<p>The binder phase varies depending on the TRIAMET\u00ae family and decisively determines the mechanical properties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>TRIAMET\u00ae S:<\/strong> Tungsten, nickel and copper (paramagnetic, coercive force approx. 3\u20134 A\/m)<\/li>\n<li><strong>TRIAMET\u00ae G:<\/strong> Tungsten, nickel and iron (weakly ferromagnetic, coercive force 200\u2013400 A\/m)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Density and Mechanical Properties<\/h2>\n<p>The density of our TRIAMET\u00ae tungsten heavy alloys ranges from 13.9 to 18.9 g\/cm\u00b3 \u2013 making TRIAMET\u00ae one of the densest industrially applicable materials available. The tungsten content varies by type between 71 and 98.2 wt.%. As the proportion of the binder phase increases, ductility and elongation at break rise; lower binder proportions result in higher densities and strengths. Tensile strength ranges from over 600 to up to 1,000 N\/mm\u00b2 depending on the type, with hardness values between 230 and 350 HV10.<\/p>\n<p>If the residual magnetism of the G-family is undesirable in a given application, TRIAMET\u00ae of the \u201eS&#8221; family is the recommended choice. Its nickel-copper binder is paramagnetic and exhibits only a negligible coercive force of approximately 3 A\/m together with tungsten.<\/p>\n<h2>Economical Machining Despite High Density<\/h2>\n<p>Despite densities of up to 18.9 g\/cm\u00b3, TRIAMET\u00ae tungsten heavy alloys can be machined efficiently and economically using conventional metal-cutting processes. Even complex components with the highest dimensional accuracy can be produced from suitable semi-finished products. The powder metallurgical manufacturing process enables material-saving production: green compacts already reach up to 80% of their final density, which is fully achieved through subsequent liquid-phase sintering at high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Available supply forms include finished machined parts to drawing as well as semi-finished products in the form of rods, plates and blocks \u2013 including oversized lengths and special dimensions, round, octagonal or square, available at short notice worldwide. TRIAMET\u00ae tungsten heavy alloy meets the requirements of ASTM B777.<\/p>\n<h2>Damping, High-Temperature Strength and Thermal Expansion<\/h2>\n<p>The outstanding vibration damping properties of TRIAMET\u00ae tungsten heavy alloy are based on its high modulus of elasticity of up to 390 kN\/mm\u00b2 and its characteristic microstructure. Components of identical dimensions made from TRIAMET\u00ae exhibit approximately 40% less deflection compared to steel. In addition, TRIAMET\u00ae offers excellent high-temperature strength up to 1,000 \u00b0C and a low coefficient of thermal expansion \u2013 for the densest type G19, this is as low as 4.8 \u00d7 10\u207b\u2076\/K (measured from 20 to 800 \u00b0C). This combination makes tungsten heavy alloy the ideal material for tooling in hot forming and joining technology.<\/p>\n<h2>Radiation Shielding with Tungsten Heavy Alloy<\/h2>\n<p>TRIAMET\u00ae heavy metals are used specifically for radiation shielding due to their high absorption capacity for high-energy electromagnetic radiation \u2013 particularly gamma and X-rays. With density values of up to 18.9 g\/cm\u00b3, TRIAMET\u00ae enables compact shielding solutions that are simultaneously dimensionally stable, non-toxic and RoHS-compliant.
