Investigations on laser powder bed fusion of tungsten heavy alloys
Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) offers significant potentialities for the design of complex part geometries. Due to the specific combination of properties, tungsten heavy alloys are used for special applications such as X-ray and γ-radiation shielding, balancing weights, collimators and molds. For optimum performance, complex geometries can be required in those applications.

The Royal Discipline of TIG Welding: Part 2 of 2
In last months introduction to this series, we demonstrated how, in order to optimize the electrode for the respective process, extensive know-how about the tool is just as important as extensive knowledge of the are of application itself. In the following article, we`ll see how geometry also plays a critical role in tungsten electrode performance.

High-performance tungsten-based materials make casting processes more cost-effective and improve quality
Fire cracks and corrosion are the most common types of casting tool damage in light metal casting. Usually such damage reduces product quality, which may worsen even further under somecircumstances due to adhesion or inadequate heat dissipation. With its Triamet A product family, a tungsten-based heavy metal alloy, Bayerische Metallwerke GmbH offers an innovative and ecological alternative that avoids these problems. Thanks to a tungsten content of up to 98 percent, the Triamet A materials withstand the stresses of frequent temperature changes in the casting process over the long term and set themselves apart with high corrosion resistance compared to aluminium and copper alloys. The various tungsten alloys are being presented at this year’s ALUMINIUM 2016 trade fair in Düsseldorf.
